7/12/12

Today started off at a church known as the Marble Church. It was a cute little church built by a wife in remembrance of her deceased husband. It's also known as the Wedding Cake church because it looks like the churches they put on top of wedding cakes. From there, we went to St. Asaph's Cathedral. This church is special because it is where the bible was translated to Welsh, which is a really big deal in the Welsh culture. Many people believe it is the sole reason for survival of the Welsh language. From there we went to a neat place called Holywell. It is a pilgrimage site for thousands of Christians because the pool and water there are believed to have healing powers. The site dates hundreds of years back and there were many stories of miracles performed through this holy water. I even drank some of it from the well! The last stop of the day was in Chester, which is in England. It is a Roman town, complete with Roman architecture and its own Roman amphitheater where gladiators fought. There was lots of shopping and we also took a tour. It was a very busy town right on the border of Wales and England. I am trying to collect some clothing from each university I visit, so I bought a Bangor sweatshirt tonight. Tomorrow we are going to see some castles and perhaps take a boat ride to Puffin Island. The weather today was beautiful, which we've come to learn is a nice treat in Wales.
